Overview
Boudhanath Stupa is believed to be very old, possibly built in the 5th century. According to legend, a woman named Jadzima or Jadzima built the stupa with the help of her sons. She wanted to create a sacred place for Buddha's blessings. Another story says that the stupa was built to preserve the remains of Lord Buddha.
Over time, it became an important center for Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. After the arrival of Tibetan refugees in the 1950s, Boudhanath became even more important. Many Tibetan monasteries were built around the stupa, making it a strong center of Buddhist culture and religion.
